California High Speed Rail

December 31st, 1969

Proposition 1A appears to be heading for a victory in California. Passage of this proposition would start funding construction of a high-speed rail line between the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco and Los Angeles Union Station. The trip would take about 2 1/2 hours, and would cost $55 one way. After departing San Francisco, the train would make stops on the Peninsula and in San Jose and Gilroy before heading over the Pacheco Pass to the San Joaquin Valley and points south.
The system would be the largest public works project in California history - bigger than the California Aqueduct - and would cost $32 billion for the main line between San Francisco and Los Angeles and another $10 billion to $12 billion to complete the network with extensions to San Diego, Sacramento and Riverside County. The state is banking on getting about a third of the construction budget from state taxpayers, a third from the federal government and a third from private investors.

Another hearing is coming in the on going battle to save the world famous Trestles surfing beach from the effects of building a toll road. It’s up to everyone to do their part and help save this valuable Southern California beach.

The Department of Commerce’s September 22 public hearing on the Toll Road is approaching quickly and the deadline for requests to speak is September 12. Somewhat peculiar to this hearing is the requirement that a physical copy of your request must be mailed to the Department of Commerce. We encourage you to send in your request to speak by the end of this week in order to allow sufficient time for the request to arrive. Make sure that your request contains your Name and Address. Send your request to the following address:

1305 East- West Highway, Room 6111
Silver Spring, MD 20910
Alternatively, you may email your Name and Address to marty@savesanonofre.com by Sept. 7 and we will send your request for you.
Awareness Demonstrations
It is imperative that we generate a strong presence of opposition to the Toll Road for the 9/22 hearing. As such, we will be taking to the streets to bring attention, and attendance, to the coming hearing. At these demonstrations, we will be waving signs, holding surfboards, and constructing miniature plastic tents to emphasize the harm to the camping and surfing experience that would be wrought by the proposed Toll Road. We’ll bring the supplies. All we need is your exuberance.
