In 2000 Avila Beach had a major renovation after the town was nearly destroyed by a huge oil spill. New construction includes a boardwalk and beachfront park. The pier remains the same and is a favorite location for fishing. The primary fish here is white croaker. Avila had the highest fish-per-angler average of any pier in the central coast area. Two thirds of the fish caught off the pier are white croaker. Other speices caught are, jacksmelt, walleye surfperch, shinerperch and calico bass. If you plan on doing some swimming at Avilia Beach here’s a little side note. On August 19, 2003, Deborah Franzman, age 50, was killed in a shark attack while swimming 75 yards (69 m) off Avila Beach in about 20 feet of water. She was wearing a wetsuit and fins and sea lions were present. The shark was estimated to be 15-18 feet long. Tourism temporarily declined after the event, but quickly recovered. Fishing from the pier seems to be a much safer activity in Avilia Beach than swimming. Directions: Take Hwy. 101 to Avila Rd. and go west; turn left off of Avila Rd. on to Front St. and follow it to the pier.
